Paranoid thought for the day

The rapturists have the launch codes.: “A lot of people have commented on the evangelical takeover of the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, but as far as I can tell not one of them is appropriately paranoid about it, and has asked one timfoil question: just who staffs NORAD, and what happens if they decide it’s time for Jesus to come back right now?

  1. Why would it be scarier to have someone who believes in God with their finger on the button, as opposed to someone who doesn’t and might be willing to take us ALL to oblivion with him?

That said, I’m not in favor of unfounded paranoia against atheists…

  2. Bill, it’s not a question of someone’s “believing in God” being more or less scary than someone’s not, but rather a question of having a possible fanatic with his finger on the trigger. And, there’s not really a lot of difference between a “rapturist” and the guys who played that game of “chicken” with the Twin Towers. Most Christians are happy to carry on with their day-to-day lives without actively thinking that “today could be THE day” which is the whole mindset for the “Rapturist”.

  3. Most of the atheists I know fear death more than those with faith, because as atheists have a harder time believing in an afterlife of any kind. Assuming this is true of most atheists, I would think they’d be less likely to incite nuclear war than someone with faith.

Don’t get me wrong – someone with faith is a far cry from a zealot.

I don’t see Evangelicals as possible fanatics by virtue of their faith. I’m not into the whole “Left Behind” thing but those who are don’t automatically earn my fear.

Really? Ummmm, my impression of evangelicals is that they would probably think they were going to go to hell if they committed an act of mass murder. Seems a far cry from the beliefs of the 9/11 terrorists. Equating the two over a belief in God would be as crazy as equating an atheist with Mao.
