You betcha

Absolutely Shameless:

From Crooks and Liars: The National Review Online is suggesting the Republican Party schedule their 2008 national convention in New Orleans.

(Via Suburban Guerrilla.)

Oh, yeah. Why don’t we jam them into the Convention Center, then keep them in there for the length of the convention without food, water, and working toilets? Maybe we can even have some dead babies in there, and I’m not talking about the fetuses in jars that so many Republicans seem to bring to these events.

And don’t forget the moat of swamp water.

  1. bad idea, Glenn. They might actually, you know, work together to make the best of a bad situation, sing songs, organize some kind of way to cope. It would reflect badly on the folks who were stuck in there with a small but active group of criminals. people would see this and think “Hey, those Republicans really know how to get going when the going gets tough.” You want that?

I think it would be a great idea for EITHER party to hold their convention in New Orleans–it would, at the very least, ensure that half of congress would be working like crazy to make sure the city looks good by 2006.

If the Democrats are smart enough to do it I’ll praise them to the skies. As, I suspect, will some of the same folks castigating this proposal from National review.

  2. Any how many untold millions would this feed into NOLA’s economy?

Yep, bringing money into the city – how horrible!

  3. We American’s have to look no further than the illustrius Mayor Nagin and Louisiana Governor Blanco for the reasons thousands had to live in their own excriment for a week.

What did the Mayor do to be blamed? If he used the taxpayer owned municipal and school system buses that now sit under water, he could have evacuated over 20,000 in one trip. Was President Bush supposed to fly down and drive one of the New Orleans buses, or is that something that should have been done on a local level?

What did the Governor do to be blamed? Have you seen the disaster plan she signed into law? She gave the order to use Mayor Nagin’s buseses 48 hours after the hurricane hit. Bush had to push her to declare an emergency so he could begin the prepositioning of assets.

Democrats, look to your own party to find the murderers of thousands of poor black people. When the whole story comes out how Blanco fought with Bush when he tried to ready Louisiana for Katrina, and potty mouth Nagin let 500 publically owned buses get swallowed up in filthy water, Democrats will never win another seat in the state of Louisiana.

Oh, like the people who were in there for a week weren’t trying to find a way to cope? Good grief.

I remember how much money the Republican National Convention funneled into New York last year. In fact, it cost the city millions.

Bush had to push her to declare an emergency so he could begin the prepositioning of assets.

Sadly, no. Gov. Blanco declared an emergency before the storm even hit. You missed the retraction. I wonder which senior White House official was peddling that story? Maybe the same one who burned the cover of an undercover CIA agent working on WMD?

There’s also this Statement on Federal Emergency Assistance for Louisiana, which appears on the White House website dated August 27th, which begins: “The President today declared an emergency exists in the State of Louisiana and ordered Federal aid to supplement state and local response efforts in the parishes located in the path of Hurricane Katrina beginning on August 26, 2005, and continuing.”

    Key excerpts include …

The President’s action authorizes the Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), to coordinate all disaster relief efforts which have the purpose of alleviating the hardship and suffering caused by the emergency on the local population, and to provide appropriate assistance for required emergency measures, authorized under Title V of the Stafford Act, to save lives, protect property and public health and safety, or to lessen or avert the threat of a catastrophe … Specifically, FEMA is authorized to identify, mobilize, and provide at its discretion, equipment and resources necessary to alleviate the impacts of the emergency.

And that wasn’t even required; ever since 9/11, the feds have taken it on themselves to run these sorts of things.

This National Response Plan was accepted and implemented by Bush Administration in December 2004. According to the PREFACE, President Bush, “directed the development of a new National Response Plan (NRP) to align Federal coordination structures, capabilities, and resources into a unified, all discipline, and all-hazards approach to domestic incident management. . . .The end result is vastly improved coordination among Federal, State, local, and tribal organizations to help save lives and protect America’s communities by increasing the speed, effectiveness, and efficiency of incident management.” Don’t take my word for it, read the plan yourself. Er, no, but I can see were that would be an easier argument to disagree with than the one I made.

No critisism of the people trapped in the dome was implied or intended. You can pretend that reality is otherwise but the Republican (and Democratic convention, for that matter) is made up of upper middle class and rich people of all races. They do not include gang members and the other predators who preyed on the innocents. Conventions also have enough security to ensure nobody gets out of line.

I was just playing along with your fantasy. In reality, it would be illegal to kidnap the republicans and force them into a gulag of your making, despite whatever pleasure the thought may give you.
