Speaking of rolling over odometers

Man, what a drive.

Since Sunday at 5 PM, I’ve driven from Weehawken, NJ to the Huntington, WV (at the border of WV, Ohio, and Kentucky) to pick up my new Prius, then to Carrboro, NC to pick up my friend Scott for the funeral, then back up to NJ, and then out to Port Jefferson for the funeral, with a quick detour to Shoreham, and then back home last night at about 12 PM.

In less than 36 hours, I put nearly 1000 miles on the new car. (This ain’t counting the 500 miles to go pick it up.) Yeesh. More later.

UPDATE: Went out to get the car this morning, and lo and behold– a parking ticket. Sigh. I wouldst have words with these folks…

  1. Cool, you have a Prius! I can’t wait to see it!

I just passed 4000 miles on my Hyundai, which I’ve had for about 6 months, and I’m not nearly as scared of driving it at night as I was last time I saw you…

  2. Glenn,

As I am sure you know, the absolute best way to break in any new auto is to put it on the highway and drive it long distances for 1,000 to 3,000 miles– right at the start. You’ve just helped to insure the longevity of your auto.

On a side note, did you know that Adam & Eve, the country’s largest mail order purveyor of sex dvds, toys and accessories, is based in– of all places– Carrboro, N.C.?

    HAPPY AND SAFE DRIVING!

  3. It’s also the second most liberal city in the south, next to Chapel Hill, NC. which is funny considering that NC is such a red state.

  4. Sometimes I feel like a taxi for my friends- picking people up can really start adding up, miles-wise. Good luck with the new car, hope it holds up well for ya.

  5. Um, Carrboro, the Paris of the Piedmont, *is* next to Chapel Hill. It’s this pretty small little place that probably at one time justified being a separate town, but at least since ’78 when I started at UNC I’ve never seen any reason why other than legal and post office reasons once would distinguish Chapel Hill from Carrboro; if a sign wasn’t up, you’d never realize you’d moved from Chapel Hill into Carrboro.

Glenn, forget if you do the non-pork thing, but if not I hope Scott had you swing by Allen & Sons for some ‘cue.

  6. Tom, I did indeed go to Allen & Sons. I insisted– if I’m going to drive four hours out of my way, I was damn well going to get barbecue out of it.

Yum. I’m not sure whether I liked the pork or the hush puppies more. Brought a pound up for later usage, and I have a feeling I may have Scott doing some drop-shipping. It’s an easy way to bribe certain comic book editors.

Inside, I was reminded about Adam and Eve when I passed the highway billboards. Right next to the billboards for the “homeschooling headquarters” and the Bible Factory Warehouse.

So far, the car’s doing great; averaging 42+ MPH. I expect it to go up as I get more city driving in and get the hang of the car. Michael, if I make it to Arisia, we’ll go for a spin.

  7. Tom,

I haven’t been to Chapel Hill since the fifth grade and then just for the planetarium. I try to avoid the town like Superman avoids kryptonite, so I’ll just have to take your word on how close Chapel Hill and Carrboro are.

On the other hand, I over shot Cary once was was right on the outskirts of Chapel Hill before I realized I had gone too far. So yeah, I know you can’t swing a dead cat in these here parts without hitting another township like Apex, Sanford, Garner, and Auburn just to name a few.
